I’ve been a trainer for 7 years, and that means I’ve heard my fair share of excuses. There are INFINITE problems that will keep you from reaching your fitness goals, but there are also infinite solutions. You have to decide if you’re going to let the business of life compromise your health, or if you’re going to find a way to incorporate healthy habits into your life despite those things.
Here are some obstacles my clients often face that I’m able to help them overcome with the right strategy:
“I’m not in the right headspace.”
“I’m moving.”
“I’m starting a new job.”
“I have kids.”
“I work crazy hours.”
“I can’t stay consistent with my diet.”
“I’m an emotional eater / I like to snack.”
If you aren’t in the right headspace, let’s try to find out why. If we can’t, let’s incorporate levels of accountability into your program that make it UNCOMFORTABLE for you NOT to keep the promises you’ve made to yourself. If we can keep you accountable for a few weeks, we can get you a result – and just imagine what that will do for your headspace!
If you’re moving, let’s find a way to accommodate whatever storage and time restrictions you have, and let’s also factor in the time you’ll be spending packing/ lifting boxes into your workouts since that is physically strenuous activity.
If you’re starting a new job, let’s look at your schedule and figure out what the best times are for you to have your meals. Once you get situated, we can readjust them. Did you get a raise with this new job opportunity? AWESOME, let’s hire a meal prep company for your first few weeks to take the stress off – I can recommend quite a few that have awesome, affordable options.
You have kids? GREAT.. You work crazy hours? SAME. You have cravings and/or an inconsistent diet? Let’s find out why.
There isn’t ONE solution to all the problems you will ever face; life is constantly changing! That’s why your approach to reaching your fitness goals should be able to adapt to whatever life throws at you – not the other way around. Your life should never have to adapt to your health regimen, it should be enhanced by it! Putting your fitness journey on hold will not only cause you to lose the progress you’ve made, but it will communicate the message to yourself and to those around you that your health is not actually a priority to you.
If you aren’t functioning at your best, do you think the stresses of life are going to feel any easier? Prioritizing good nutrition and frequent physical activity will not only produce a positive chemical reaction to improve your mood (hello endorphins!), but it will also give you more energy and focus to perform better in the other aspects of your life: like for instance, your job!
By taking care of yourself first, you’ll be better in every other aspect! The very thing you keep “putting on pause” might be the one thing that could take you to the next level! So if the question is “how do I improve my quality of life”, the answer is ALWAYS “becoming healthier”. Just keep in mind, the answer stays the same; the approach will always be different.

I often like to use the following nutrition analogy: building a strong house is a lot like building a strong or healthy self.
Imagine a scenario where you were given the task of building a house. For this task, you were presented a large number of tools or materials ranging from lego bricks to power tools. The quality level of your house would depend on your skill level and the efficiency of the tools and materials you chose, correct?
